Acupuncture

Acupuncture old book

Acupuncture is an important component in Traditional Chinese Medicine which prevents and treats disease by puncturing certain points on the body with needles.

The therapeutic and preventive results are achieved through promoting smooth circulation in the channels and adjusting qi and blood by stimulating the points and channels

How acupuncture works can be explained in different ways;

In Chinese medicine it's said to be improving circulation of qi and blood.

The physiological mechanisms of acupuncture are;

  • stimulation of electromagnetic signals in the body

    • this activates the flow of pain killing biochemicals such as endorphins,

    • and mobilises immune system cells to injured areas.

  • activation of opioids in the brain which relieves pain and improves sleep.

  • release of neurotransmitters and hormones;

    • boosts immune system

    • regulates metabolic functions such as blood pressure, blood flow, temperature and blood sugar

Depression for instance could be seen as a form of stagnant qi and acupuncture will promote free flow in channels, improve circulation and like that lift your mood.

Another example can be shoulder pain after an injury, In Chinese medicine that would be a stagnation of blood. Acupuncture unblocks the channels involved, increasing blood circulation and hormone production necessary to heal the injured tissues.

Our acupuncture treatments

  • Chinese acupuncture originated over 3000 years ago and one of the most important written classics, the Huangdi Neijing, was compiled between 300-500 B.C.. Remarkably though, the traditional Chinese acupuncture as we know it is only developed after 1949.

  • Auricular acupuncture is a rather modern form of acupuncture, only using points on the ears and although there's quite a few connections with Traditional Chinese Medicine, it's usually used as a reflex therapy comparable with foot reflexology.

  • Scalp acupuncture is also a modern development in acupuncture. Instead of using points as in traditional acupuncture in scalp acupuncture we use lines where we insert the needles along.

  • Facial rejuvenation acupuncture has been practiced as early as 2000 years ago. Through improving blood circulation and production of natural collagen it deals with wrinkles, sagging of the face, facial discoloration, age spots, dark eyes, eye bags etc.
